Vital Signs: Breastfeeding is it beneficial?

Vital Signs, March 31. (NTV News)

A new study released this week shows no long term cognitive benefits of breast feeding.

The new study published in the Journal Pediatrics finds little impact on long term behaviors.

Jessica Nelson and her husband are celebrating little Emma’s birth. She's darling and off to a healthy start.

Mom says breastfeeding is the way to go.

"One benefit for sure is the benefit between child and mother. Breastfeeding increases that bond," said Jessica Nelson.

A new study, that followed over 7,000 children shows no real long term cognitive benefits to breastfeeding.

Deanne Birkestrand is a lactation consultant at CHI Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

"I'm a little confused about the study. Most of the moms I work with don't decide on how they feed their infant on long term, cognitive development," said Deanne Birkestrand, Lactation Consultant/CHI Good Samaritan Hospital.

She says caregivers were interviewed in the study and they didn't thoroughly test the cognitive abilities of the kids once they were between 3 and 5.

Moms like Jessica still see great positives to nursing.

"It's natural and healthy and the best choice for my daughter," said Nelson.

"The reason is important. But you need to decide for you own life," said Birkestrand.
