Aurora borealis will be visible from U.S. Sunday. (MGN)

Sunday night could offer people a chance to see the Northern Lights.

The geomagnetic storm known as "aurora borealis" could be visible from much of the northern U.S.

That includes areas as far south a New York, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota, and Washington state.

It happens when electrically charged particles collide with neutral atoms in the upper atmosphere, creating a spectacular show of lights.

The best time to watch it is from 11 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday eastern time.
