Eclipse preparations reveal sunspot with telescope

Larry Gier of Grand Island captured this with his telescope, as he prepares for the eclipse (Larry Gier)

Gearing up for the eclipse brought a surprise for a local man.

Viewers need special glasses to look at the eclipse, since looking directly at the sun can damage your eyes.

But what about stargazers with telescopes?

Larry Gier of Grand Island is using a reflecting screen, which projects the image from his telescope.

He tested it out on Thursday by shooting some video to get things set for the eclipse.

He got more than he was counting on.

As he zoomed in, he could see a sunspot on the lower right part of the image.

Gier said it was neat to see, and he's looking forward to the big show on Aug. 21.
