Grand Island man pleads not guilty to murder charge

A man accused in a New Year's Day murder made his plea in district court on Tuesday.

Herbey V. Portillo, 24, pleaded not guilty to murder in the first degree and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony in connection to the murder of Trevor Sok, 19.

"Herbey V. Portillo as to count one murder in the first degree, a class 1A felony how do you wish to plead sir?," said Hall County district court Judge Mark Young.

"Innocent, not guilty," said defendant Herbey V. Portillo.

"As to count two use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, a class 1C felony how do you wish to plead sir?," said Judge Young.

"Not guilty," said Portillo.

Sok was shot on New Year's Day around 3:45 a.m. at a party in Grand Island.

Portillo was later arrested after he was found in a garage in Grand Island on Jan. 2nd.

Currently, he is being held without bond.

Family and friends of Sok were gathered in the courtroom sporting shirts of a football helmet with angel wings.

Portillo's jury trial is scheduled to start on August 6th.
