Hastings Lights Contest offers chance for community members to vote on favorite display
HASTINGS, Neb. —
The snow in the air on Wednesday reminds us that Christmas is just in 19 days.
The city is scouting out contestants for its annual holiday lighting contest.
The Hastings Lights Contest is where folks in the area can show off their Christmas decorations whether it is lights or a tree of lights.
Ryan Martin of the Hastings Parks and Recreation judged holiday lights as he went door to door going to six different houses.
"Our staff is judging them on creativity, Christmas spirit, proportion and scale and overall design,” Martin said.
He said the department has been doing this for eight years.
"My favorite thing is talking to the people, seeing why they like to do this. You can obviously tell that they are all passionate about decorating their house and getting into the spirit of things,” Martin said.
This year they want the public’s help by putting up videos of houses on Facebook.
"And then the community can vote and like their favorite contestant and then whoever gets the most likes will get point value and overall points will be our winner,” Martin said.
This is an ongoing event for the community of Hastings.
Martin said this promotes a spirit of inclusiveness that encourages locals to visit different parts of the neighborhoods.
