Update: At least 8 homes destroyed in fire

Nebraska State Patrol Troop D is evacuating some homes near Lake McConaughy because of a fire. (NTV)

UPDATE Monday:

At least eight homes were destroyed in the grass fire that burnt at least 500 acres Sunday, according to the Keystone-Lemoyne Fire Department.

They said fire was contained Monday, but crews are monitoring the scene for any hot spots.

Authorities said most people evacuated Sunday were able to return back to their homes Monday morning.

Some roads leading to Lake McConaughy were still closed late Monday morning.

UPDATE Sunday 6:55 p.m.:

According to the Keystone- Lemoyne Command Fire & Rescue chief, the fire is now under control and those evacuated from their homes will be able to return in a few days.

Some homes were destroyed in the fire. According to Lemoyne Command Fire & Rescue, about 500 acres was burned.

UPDATE Sunday 5:14 p.m.:

Some rural homes near Lake McConaughy had to be evacuated in western Nebraska because of a nearby grass fire.

The Nebraska State Patrol evacuated a small number of homes on the north side of Lake McConaughy Sunday because of a large grass fire.

More than 15 fire departments were called to respond to the blaze Sunday after it rekindled around midday Sunday in Keith County. It was originally reported around 11 p.m. Saturday.

Authorities were asking people to stay away from Lake McConaughy on Sunday so fire crews could reach the area.

UPDATE Sunday 3:17 p.m.:

According to State Patrol Troop D, the fire rekindled from last night. Highway 92 is closed, and evacuations are ongoing.

Nebraska State Patrol Troop D is evacuating some homes near Lake McConaughy because of a fire.

Roads leading to the lake are closed. Troopers are asking people to stay away from the area.

According to the Keith County Sheriff's Office, the fire began around noon and more than 15 fire departments are responding.
