Balancing the family budget

Personal and business finances can be one in the same on a farm or ranch. University of Nebraska educators want producers to know how to trim their home finances during this down economy.

They say finances can lead to some serious consequences.

"We don't like to talk about it but suicide rates and accidental deaths definitely get higher because people think that is the only way they can survive., so talking to the family, understanding those cues of somebody that's really on the borderline and getting them help is also critical," said Amy Timmerman, UNL Extension Educator.

Timmerman said you can cut costs by watching what you eat, identifying needs versus wants and thinking about cutting a cable or satellite TV service.

She said, get the entire family involved and kids invested in the farm or ranch operation.
