Athlete of the Week: Cayden Owens
A year after losing at state, Burwell got redemption Monday. They surged past Guardian Angels Central Catholic 48-17 to capture the D1 title.
Junior quarterback Cayden Owens led from the front, including a march down the field on the game's opening possession.
“It set the tone, because everyone is nervous before the game, and everyone has got those jitters. Scoring on the first drive definitely set the tempo, and just really the mood of the game, and the atmosphere. And that was really big for us, coming out and starting well, because we were down 22-0 in the state championship last year at halftime,” said Cayden Owens, Burwell junior, QB.
Owens rushed for three scores and hooked up with tight end Tyler Gideon for another two.
“I tell him, he throws the ball and I go get it wherever it is at. That's my job. He throws it, and it is my job to catch it. That's what I do. I go out of my way for anything to get that ball,” said Tyler Gideon, Burwell senior, TE/DE.
Gideon and senior running back Tori Huffman garnered most of the notoriety this season. But, Monday, Owens proved he's capable of propelling the offense.
“He can play. He's not fast, real fast, but he's deceptive and he makes good moves, makes good decisions, and he does a good job of running the offense. He's a smart kid,” said Luke Gideon, Burwell head coach.
