Athlete of the Week: Grand Island Central Catholic's Jack Goering
Grand Island Central Catholic's Jack Goering is in the midst of his second season on the varsity squad. The sophomore guard has made his presence known through his versatile offensive game.
"He's just a well-rounded player; he has a lot of different abilities to do a lot of different things. When you can shoot it, drive it, dish it, you're a big weapon, and he is that for us," said Tino Martinez, GICC boys basketball coach.
The Crusaders entered last week 3-3 with their holiday tournament quickly approaching. That's when Jack caught fire. Goering led GICC to victory in both of their games, scoring a season-high 26 points against Shelby-Rising City.
"The key has been to make sure to cut hard off screens and have your hands and feet ready at all times and try to knock down shots," Goering said.
Jack averaged 19 points per game, while also shooting a red hot 56 percent from behind the arc in the Crusaders' four wins last week. It came as no surprise to his head coach who has seen Goering put in the extra hours on the hardwood to be successful.
"You basically have to kick him out of the gym. Even on our days off he's up here with our shooting machine. The time he spends on it I think is the reward for him, you know, because he sees those hours and other kids see those hours that he puts in and it shows on game night," said Martinez.
