Huskers, Jays rank top 10 in AVCA preseason poll

Kelly Hunter prepares to serve in a match (NTV News)

The University of Nebraska volleyball team is ranked fifth in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll.

Coming off a season when they were favored to repeat as national champions, the Huskers said goodbye to four seniors but can rely on senior setter Kelly Hunter as the centerpiece of the offense.

Nebraska's season begins on Aug. 19 at the Devaney Center for the Red-White scrimmage and the regular season opens Aug. 25 versus Oregon at the VERT Challenge in Gainesville, Fla.

Creighton finished the 2016 season ranked 9th and stayed there to open 2017, tied for the highest ranking in program history. The Jays play their Blue-White scrimmage Friday night and begin with an exhibition at Kansas State on Aug. 18. Regular season play begins Aug. 25 for Creighton at the Husky Invitational when they play St. Mary's.
