Bronco softball gets out of hole, wins GPAC tournament over Morningside
Hastings College called on star pitcher Josie Bumgardner to get the Broncos out of the final inning and win the deciding Game 3 over Morningside, 5-4, to win the GPAC tournament, for the first time since 2009.
Midland made it interesting with a two-run home run in the bottom of the 7th to make it a one run deficit.
But it was the Broncos who made the more impressive comeback. Losing Game 1 8-1, while Rachel Henks held the Bronco offense at bay with 10 strikeouts, Hastings College came back in Game 2 and got a solid start from Bumgardner.
A complete game effort from Bumgardner did not come without some scares, as she surrendered 10 hits, and the defense was able to only allow two runs. Bumgardner ended up winning it with a grand slam in the top of the 5th, part of a five run inning.
Having already advanced to the national tournament by qualifying for the GPAC championship, Hastings College only enhanced its standing in the seeding process by knocking off the nationally ranked Mustangs.
