Broncos ride Willingham to great start

Hastings College junior running back Tahj Willingham (10) beats the defenders to the end zone on Aug. 26, 2017, in a 31-3 Bronco win over Jamestown, N.D. (KHGI)

Two weeks into the NAIA season and the Hastings College Broncos are off to the races.

Leading the charge is Tahj Willingham, galloping for 241 yards in his first two games.

"You know he's doing a lot more vertical stuff side by side," said head coach Tony Harper. "Tahj is just a very good zone back and we've been able to get some creases and get north and south as quick as possible."

Ranking 7th in NAIA total rushing yards and helping the Broncos produce the No. 5 rushing offense in the nation.

"We're conditioning a lot more in practice," Willingham says. "We feel more in shape physically than a lot of other teams we play and a lot of things are just simple, fine tuning, just simple things in football."

Expect to see more coming Saturday as the Broncos pit their rushing attack up against a Valley City State defense who allowed 172 yards last week against Dickinson State.

The Bronco offense, which ranks 7th in NAIA scoring and 37th in total offense, should have a field day against a Viking defense ranking in the bottom half of total and scoring defense.

Hastings College looks for a 3–0 start to the season for the second year in a row. Get out to Lloyd Wilson Field at 1 p.m. Saturday.
