Broncos take down Moundbuilders
WINFIELD, KS --- The Hastings College football team defeated Southwestern in a shootout 52-35 on Saturday night as a part of the KCAC/GPAC Challenge.
Hastings would get off to an ideal start when Jeremiah Hodges would block a Moundbuilder punt that would go out of bounds at the 3-yard line setting the offense up for its first score of the first quarter.
It would then only take one play for Tahj Willingham to find his way into the end zone from five yards out to give the Broncos the early 7-0 lead.
Following a three-and-out by the defense, Anthony Murray took the punt and returned it 49 yards and then two plays later, Anthony Cloyd would find Noah Housh for his first of two touchdowns on the day to push the Hastings lead to 14-0 midway through the first quarter.
Southwestern would have an answer on its next drive marching 79 yards for a touchdown and following the missed extra point, Hastings now led 14-6.
The Bronco offense would then go back to work and would march into Moundbuilder territory before the drive would stall at the Southwestern 21 setting up Alex Stogdill for a 38-yard field goal to give Hastings the 17-6 lead.
One of the bigger drives of the game came following a big Jacob Tarr interception at the Bronco 24 yard line. Hastings would go to work marching 76 yards on 13 plays capped off by Willingham's second touchdown of the game pushing the lead to 24-9.
The teams would then go back and forth into the fourth quarter where Hastings would lead 31-23 before the offenses on both sides just went off in the last 15 minutes.
With Hastings leading by eight, the Broncos drew up a great play action play that saw Cloyd find a wide open Housh for a 59-yard touchdown to push the lead to 38-23 early in the fourth quarter.
After the Bronco defense got a stop, Hastings would use a fake field goal and a fourth down conversion with back-up quarterback Clark Livingston would find Alex Lane for a four yard touchdown giving Hastings the 45-23 lead.
When the fourth quarter finally ended, the teams combined for 47 points before Hastings finally won the game 52-35.
Willingham had another great performance rushing for 118 yards on 24 carries and three touchdowns. Cloyd added 63 yards and a score.
Cloyd was 12-21 for 202 yards and two touchdowns. Housh led the receiving corp with 114 yards on five catches and two scores.
Hastings finished the day with 446 yards of total offense while the Moundbuilders finished with 474 yards.
