Lopers get strong outing from Achtermann
KEARNEY, Neb. —
Junior right hander Alex Achtermann tossed another gem and six different players had an RBI to help Nebraska-Kearney beat Washburn, 6-3, Friday morning at Memorial Field.
Due to the winter storm, the first pitch of this series opener was moved up to 9 a.m. The teams were slated to play another game but rainy, cold and windy conditions forced a postponement. A double header will now be played Sunday at a site and time to be determined.
Both teams played a very clean game considering the conditions. There were no errors with Achtermann (Denver, Colo.) out dueling Washburn ace Josh Ramirez.
Now 4-1 on the year with a 2.77 ERA, Achtermann fanned eight, walked just one and gave up only three earned runs in 8.1 innings. Tossing 121 pitches, several of the eight hits he allowed were due to the weather conditions. Achtermann shut out the Ichabods (11-26, 5-21) in four innings before giving way to junior closer Eric Sandoz. The Texan now has six saves, five off the Loper season record, as he coaxed Washburn to hit into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play. Sandoz has a team-best 1.71 ERA in 15 appearances and 21.0 innings.
Ramirez (2-2) also threw well, blanking UNK (21-15, 14-8) in the first and fourth innings. However, he was tagged for nine hits and walked three Lopers in six innings. Fanning seven, Ramirez gave up one in the second, two in the third and three more over the fifth and sixth innings.
A balanced Kearney attack was led by senior leadoff hitter Scott Platt (2 for 5, two runs), two-hole hitter Brandon Hernandez (2 for 5, one RBI) and five-hole hitter Dallas Schramm (2 for 3, one run & one RBI). Hernandez had two of UNK's seven doubles with senior third baseman Josh Estrada (1 for 3) knocking in the Lopes first run with a double down the right field line.
Washburn was led by third baseman Josh Crosby (2 for 4, two RBI's) and first baseman Brady Hoover (1 for 4). Crosby had two doubles with Hoover belting his sixth homer of the year in the sixth.
