Washburn takes doubleheader by a combined three runs from UNK softball

The Washburn Ichabods sweep over Nebraska-Kearney on Friday at the Washburn Softball Complex, dropping UNK to 6-36 overall, 3-15 in the MIAA.

Game 1 - Washburn 5, Nebraska-Kearney 3

UNK got an RBI single from Nicole Spykstra in the first to give UNK a 1-0 lead.

Two innings later, Alexis Howe unleashed a bomb to left field for a solo homerun, putting UNK up 2-0.

It unraveled for the Lopers in the fourth inning when Meg Housholder hit a batter with the bases loaded, followed by a walk, a single, and an error, as the 'Bods scored four runs.

Game 2 -- Washburn 2, Nebraska-Kearney 1

The Lopers were held to three hits until the seventh, when a lead off Loper home run by Halle Gydesen cut the lead in half at 2-1 but starting pitcher Lexi Crabtree retired the final three batters for the 2-1 win.

Washburn scored first in the nightcap after Lexie Myers led off the inning with a double and after Sanders walked, Maddie Anderson drove in Myers with a double to center pushing the Ichabods to a 1-0 lead.

UNK plays a doubleheader on Saturday at Emporia State.
