Tri-City Storm announce signing of Ruben Rafkin
KEARNEY, Neb. —
The Tri-City Storm announced the signing of defenseman Ruben Rafkin of Turku, Finland to a tender agreement for the 2018-2019 season on Friday. Committed to play at the University of Denver, Rafkin will be eligible for the 2020 NHL Draft.
Rafkin is the first tender signee of the Tri-City Storm this season. He will be on next year’s roster for Tri-City.
“Ruben Rafkin is a puck moving defenseman who has a dynamic offensive ability," owner Kirk Brooks said. "He is a world class player for his age and he will represent Finland in many future international tournaments. Rafkin has the drive to compete and the will to work to get better and for those reasons we have chosen to sign him to a tender. We are proud to welcome Ruben to the Tri-City Storm family”
Rafkin currently plays for South Kent School in South Kent, Connecticut, where he's skated in 38 games for both the U16 and midget programs this season. So far he's racked up 10 goals and 27 assists this season.
The USHL tender process allows the Storm to sign two 2002 birth year players prior to the 2018 USHL Phase I Draft. The signing will replace the Storm’s 1st round draft choice at the 2018 USHL Phase I Draft.
Rafkin is one of four international players the Storm will be allowed to have on roster in the 2018-19 season.
