Christensen powers BDS to D2 championship

BDS quarterback John Christensen (8) breaks a tackle on his way to a rushing touchdown, Nov. 20, 2017 (KHGI)

LINCOLN --- BDS quarterback John Christensen had four rushing touchdowns as the Eagles topped Blue Hill, 58-23, to win the Nebraska D2 state championship on Monday at Memorial Stadium.

The Eagles jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter as Christensen raced to a pair of touchdowns. He finished the day with 207 yards on 16 carries and a long of 64. Thomas Mick had the third score in the first quarter, a 25-yard strike, on his way to 142 yards rushing. Mick had six carries and scored on half of them.

Blue Hill, who finishes the year at 12-1, was able to get the first touchdown of the second quarter and make it a two possession game. John Rouse hit Maccoy Menke for a 30-yard completion. Menke had two catches, both touchdowns, and 72 yards receiving.

An overpowering defense for BDS held Blue Hill to 276 yards on 70 plays, under four yard (3.94) per play. Even though the Bobcats possessed the ball for 34:17 of the 48 minutes, they had no answer for big Eagle plays.

The co-op consisting of Bruning, Davenport and Shickley gashed Blue Hill for 399 yards on the ground. BDS collected 425 yards on 36 plays, an average of 11.80 yards.

BDS, playing in its third state title game in the last four years, won the D1 championship in 2015. Blue Hill returned to Lincoln for the first time since they played in the final from 2006-2008, when they were in C2 (11-man).
