GISH boys prepare for showdown with Kearney

The Grand Island Senior High boys' soccer team punching their ticket to state for the first time since 2014. GI winning a thriller over Lincoln Southwest 3-2 in a shootout to bring back a district championship.

Grand Island began the year 1–2, before picking up the pace and rattling off seven straight wins.

Now the Islanders are facing their arch–rival Kearney in the opening round, a team they've already beaten once this year.

"The truth is we've got such a good rivalry with those guys," said Grand Island head coach Jeremy Jensen. "There's nobody we would rather beat to get to the semi–finals, but if we would happen to not win, I can tell you we'll be supporting Kearney and whoever they end up playing. It's just good stuff. Steinbrook and I are good friends and we have a lot of mutual respect for each other and our two programs. We want to compete and beat each other, but at the end of the day, we're going to support each other too."

GISH and Kearney High taking the field at 11 am Wednesday at Morrison Stadium in Omaha.
