Kearney Runza grabs early lead in first to top Home Federal
KEARNEY, Neb. —
Kearney Runza jumped on Grand Island pitcher Shay Schanaman in their first at-bat and scored four runs on Home Federal, going on to a 7-3 victory.
Max Knipping, Mason Casper, Eric Pacheco and Cole Staab all had an RBI in the first inning for Kearney Runza.
Despite nine strikeouts, Schanaman was chased after 4.2 innings when Noah Halsey came on in relief to try and get Home Federal out of a dubious position. With the bases loaded, Knipping got his second RBI of the game to extend the lead thanks to a walk. Corbin Foster followed it up with a two-run hit to bring Kearney's lead up to 7-1 before Halsey finally ended the inning.
Grand Island was held scoreless by pitcher Jake Skala through the first four innings. In the top of the fifth, Home Federal got a run on the board and Skala's day was also ended with one out remaining in the frame.
Home Federal scored twice in the sixth inning but it was all the offense they could scratch up.
This was the first loss of the season for Grand Island (2-1), while Kearney improves to 6-0.
