McCook breezes through area tournament

Kaden Sitzman looks to make the turn home at the B6 area tournament for McCook in a game against Holdrege (KHGI)

MCCOOK - After capturing the B6 area tournament, McCook National Bank heads off to the State Championship bracket in Alliance.

"Feels pretty good, the kids really deserved it," said head coach Jeff Holthus.

Finishing their season 25–8, McCook went to the B6 bracket as the number one seed and breezed through without a loss. Two of McCook's three victories were by double digits, winning the championship against Holdrege 7-5.

"They gave us their 'A' game and we were lucky enough to come out on top," Holthus says.

A strong finish for a team who's been a bit up and down at points this season.

"They played their tails off all year long. We knew coming into this last game we had to throw all the records in the past out the door. They always show up and give us a good game and that's what they brought," reflected Holthus. "We started off real hot the first five or six games and then we kind of got into a skid. The turning point for us I'd say was the Hayes tournament. We went down to Hays and played five or six games against some really good competition."

McCook has only made two Nebraska championship series appearances, a runner–up in 2001 to Omaha Skutt, and beating Lincoln Pius in 1993.

McCook National Bank opens 2017 against Omaha Roncalli at 1 p.m. MDT Saturday.
