Mullen strikes late to topple the Chargers
Luke Christen made a jumper with four seconds left in the game to help Mullen beat Riverside 54-52 in a D2 semifinal Friday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Mullen, trailing 46-43 in the fourth, went on a 7-0 run to lead 50-46. Riverside then answered with four straight from Noah Velasek to tie it up at 50.
Such a close result was a shocking development based on the first few minutes when Riverside got out to a 12-0 lead. The top-rated Chargers seemed poised to waltz into Saturday.
Mullen went to work from there, cutting the deficit to 10 by the time the first quarter was up. By the fourth quarter, the Broncos were ahead 43-42.
Lance Moore leading the Broncos with 15 points. The Mullen hero, Christen, scoring the final four points for the Broncos and 11 on the night.
Valasek dropped a game-high 19 points with Treydyn Prososki nipping at his heels with 17, including Riverside's final two points from the free throw line to get the Chargers back to even with Mullen.
