Schmidt clears 'em all, Runza duo blanks Fairbury
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. —
Kearney's Keegan Thurston and Thad Huber allowed three hits in a combined five inning shutout against Fairbury, Friday at Ryder Park, helping Runza to a 12-0 victory.
Zane Schmidt, who had two hits and four RBI, blew it open in the bottom of the third with a grand slam, giving Kearney Runza a 10-0 lead.
Jared Wegner nearly put one out of the park in the bottom of the second. His shot to left field caught the wall and resulted in an RBI triple. Gabe Heins also brought a couple of runs in during the game and started the third inning rally with an RBI single.
Thurston went four full innings and racked up six strikeouts, while Huber, who also had a couple of hits in this game, closed it out in the top of the fifth.
Kearney improves to 8-0 on the season and take their game to Hastings for the remainder of the weekend. A doubleheader on Saturday at Duncan Field and they wrap up their Home Federal Classic play Sunday against Omaha Central.
