The Northwest girls are entering year number 3 under the leadership of Rico Burkett and every season has been better than the one before. The Vikings won 11 games his inaugural year. The following season, Northwest racked up 15 victories, the first winning season for Burkett.

The Vikings could be primed for big things in 2017. Northwest has won 5 of their first 7 to set the tone for the rest of the year. The Vikes credit the familiarity with Burkett's scheme for the uptick in wins every season.

"I think every year you just get a little bit more comfortable," said head coach Rico Burkett. "This is the third time around for these girls hearing the same commands and me barking those same kinds of aspects. I think it's that comfort level as well as that confidence and understanding what my role is and what my responsibilities are and just go out on the floor and execute. "

Northwest split their two games at the Doane Holiday tournament. The Vikings topped Skutt Catholic on day 1, only to fall to Crete the next afternoon. They're back in action at Lakeview on Friday.
