Nebraska state park unveils new 'glamping' cabins (Nebraska Game and Parks)

LOUISVILLE, Neb. (AP) — Visitors to an eastern Nebraska park can now enjoy camping without sacrificing the comforts of Wi-Fi, air conditioning or even Keurig K-Cups.

Nebraska Game and Parks officials are inviting visitors to turn the three new "glamping" cabins at Platte River State Park into their next getaway. Parks officials will begin taking reservations Friday for the glamorous camping alternative near Louisville costing $165 a night.

Each 500-square-foot (46-square-meter) cabin is equipped with a queen-sized bed that can roll outside for a night under the stars, mosquito net included. The cabins also have a full bathroom and a kitchen with a microwave and coffee machine. Other amenities include wine glasses, robes, slippers and even a ready-to-roast s'mores kit.

"The customer wants a little more comfort than a tent," said Jim Swenson, parks administrator. "We wanted to have the glamping experience, bring the outdoors in and indoors out to bring people closer to nature."

Campers will have an easy time braving the elements outside with lighted sidewalks, raised fire pits and decks.

State officials are testing the market with the first three cabins, but may build three more nearby in the future.

"Glamping is a trending thing; it's huge right now," Swenson said. "That's a market we need to capture."

The state and cabin designers arrived at the $165-per-night rate after researching glamping providers across the U.S., which varied from $75-per-night tents to $750 luxury experiences, Swenson said.

Designers kept Nebraska's climate in mind when incorporating heating and air condition into the structures so they can be rented year-round.

The glamping cabins cost about $1 million and were financed through a private donation, Swenson said. It's part of a $35 million project to introduce unexpected features into four state parks along the Platte River.
