Broncos wade through pool without dropping a set

Hastings College head coach Matt Buttermore talks to his team during a pool play match, Nov. 30, 2017, at the NAIA volleyball tournament (KHGI)

Hastings College finally found themselves tested at the NAIA tournament, but Montana Tech was unable to take a set from the Broncos (-17, -27, -18) in the Pool C "championship" match Thursday at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Neither of the Broncos first two opponents were able to register a block until the Orediggers stopped 10.0 attacks by Hastings College in the third outing. Sadly for Montana Tech, they were swatted on 15.0 occasions and were held to a hitting percentage of .000.

On a day when the Broncos were held to .172 hitting, it was new faces who stepped up. Matti Dabovich led the match with 10 kills and hit .421 while also helping out with a pair of blocks. Cassidy Ostrand jumped in from the outside with seven kills of her own (.389), plus Lucy Skoch was strong in her swings with three kills and in on 11 blocks from the middle.

The victory moves Hastings College to the bottom of the single elimination bracket, where they face the loser of Dordt and Missouri Baptist, Friday at 3:45 p.m. CT. A win there and the Broncos would be scheduled to play again at 8:15 p.m. CT on Friday.
