Svec throws shutout in opener against Dordt
Grant Svec gave up five hits in a complete game shutout as Hastings College knocked off Dordt, 12-0, in game one at Duncan Field on Monday afternoon.
The sophomore out of Gretna rang up six defenders via the strikeout and didn't allow a free pass until hitting Justin Silva, Dordt's second to last batter of the day. Svec improves to 3-3 on the season and improved his ERA from 4.63 to
Hastings College got out to a quick start when Ryan Schrad hit a single back up the box to score the game winning run. Schrad was 1 of 3 with a couple RBI and two runs scored. Eric Anderson continued the first for the Broncos with a single to right field, scoring the second run of the day and his lone RBI in a 2 of 4 hitting performance.
With a 3-0 lead, Hastings College scored five more runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Bryce McMullen started it off with a walk. An error on an Eric Anderson hit to second base moved McMullen to third and Anderson to second. Dylan Fitzgerald brought them both in in the next at bat. With two outs, Zack Petersen hit a single to right center, scoring Fitzgerald and AJ Schaefbauer. A bases-loaded walk earned by Schrad scored the fifth run of the frame.
The Broncos scored three more times in the bottom of the fifth on a bases loaded double by McMullen and Hastings added one more for good measure in the sixth via a Brandon Utrup sac fly. The Broncos had 12 RBI on 10 hits and only one extra base hit in the win.
Hastings College (13-16, 5-3 GPAC) is at Dakota Wesleyan for a pair of games on Tuesday (3 p.m. start), then head to Sioux City for two more on Wednesday (3 p.m.) at Morningside.
