Grand Island sneaks by Lincoln in conference opener

Shay Schanaman broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fith with a game winning home run as Grand Island knocked off Lincoln High, 4-3, in the Heartland Athletic Conference first round.

Lincoln was able to strike first on a Cole Evans wild pitch in the top of the first, scoring the first of two runs. Evans pitched 5.0 innings, giving up seven hits and three earned runs while walking four and striking out five. His season earned run average climbed to 2.44 in his first recorded win of the season.

Grand Island was led at the plate by Evans, who went 2 for 2 and scored a run. Junior Ryan Krolikwoski (1 of 3) had the only other multi-base hit with an RBI double in the second inning, spurring the Islanders to a three run second inning and reclaim the lead.

The Islanders play Lincoln Southwest in the winner's bracket at 7:00 p.m.
