American Boer Goat Association brings National Goat show to Grand Island
This week Grand Island plays host to the largest goat livestock show in the United States.
The American Boer Goat Association hosts its national show competition this week at Fonner Park in Grand Island.
Sunday marked the first day of the ABGA's National Show competition.
The competition brings together ranchers and breeders from across the country to show off their Boer goat livestock.
Deric Wetherell, the president of the ABGA, is happy the organization can use the state fair grounds to host their hundreds of competitors.
With those hundreds of competitors and over a thousand animals, the ABGA needed expansive facilities to host their national show, luckily the state fair park in Grand Island met every one of their needs.
Derek Wetherell said:
"its actually a great facility to have. It's large and we can house everybody under one roof. Obviously with expanding and growing numbers we are looking to add another barn maybe in the future and we have that possibility next door with the swine barn but so far the space has been outstanding and Fonner Park has been just great hosts to have it here.
While the ABGA is mainly focused on showing the goats the national show will also host judging competitions, a public speaking contest, and a goat skill-a-thon.
Junior members of the ABGA compete for a chance at cash prizes, scholarships, and other prizes.
The show will run from Sunday until Friday. For a complete list of events at this years show please visit http://abga.org/competition/national-show-home-page/ for more information.
