Our Sports Director, Darren Winberg, joins us after four years as a sports reporter/director in the treasure state at NBC Montana in Missoula. During his time there, he enjoyed covering the UM Grizzlies, Montana State Bobcats, high school football, and everything else involving the Treasure State.
Darren earned a broadcast journalism degree from BYU-Idaho, where he was selected to co-anchor a news show alongside a cute blonde to whom he eventually proposed on-air. The two of them have been married since 2016 and share two daughters. Being journalists, they couldn’t resist sticking with an old Hollywood theme for their girls’ names so if you see Darren around town with two little ones, make sure to wave at Monroe (3) and Presley (1).
As a Canadian native with dual citizenship, Darren is the youngest of eight kids. He left his family farm in Alberta at age 18 with just a suitcase and a dream to work as a sportscaster. His journey brought him to Las Vegas, where he was voted Mr. Nevada in Cosmopolitan Magazine. His Cosmo exposure sparked a modeling career that led to once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as appearing on Regis and Kelly and getting interviewed by the New York Post.
Darren is grateful to be living his dream and meeting fantastic people in the process. When he is not at work, you might find him exploring Nebraska with his family, watching sports, reading about sports, playing sports, or screaming at a TV when his team is losing. Darren is ecstatic to bleed red and offer coverage of your favorite Nebraska teams.
